So Slick Willie came to Raleigh to tell us we should be concerned with truth-telling.  

Ha. The Prevaricator Extraordinaire coming to bat for our President who has lied to us about the events in Benghazi. 

Right. 

Well, Yes, I do care about whether my President is telling me the truth.  And I am of the opinion that he is not. 

So, I'm not voting for him. 

If you are thinking about voting for Obama, please think long and hard before you push that button on the voting machine. 

Please pray about it, and let your Higher Spirit lead your hand.  

Even if you have loudly supported Obama in this campaign.  

Nobody else will know who you really voted for, unless you tell them.

It's called a secret ballot for a reason.

Let me explain something.  Focusing a laser on a target is done in night vision conditions, and is also called "painting a target".   It's done so others can shoot at it.  It means resources were ON-SITE, either on the ground or IN THE AIR, to take out those who were assaulting the consulate.

And the President said NO.


Why would you want to re-elect our current President?  Who does he keep safe?  The Muslim Brotherhood? Al-Quaeda? Certainly not Americans that he has sent in harm's way.

Me and Costco -- The Divorce

I've had a membership at Costco for 3 years, maybe 4.  I've budgeted my family's limited income and gone to buy our household goods and groceries, carefully comparing prices and often buying those items at Costco.

I've read a couple of articles and watched a TV magazine story about the success of Costco.  An American success story, the result of hard work and free enterprise.  I respected the people in the Costco company.

Not any more.

While watching the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, the co-founder of Costco Jim Sinegal came onstage and declared that a Barack Obama presidency would be better for America than a Mitt Romney presidency.

Well, how about that.  He's rich now because of free enterprise and capitalism.  And he's supporting a marxist.

I believe in free speech, and Mr. Sinegal  has a right to publicly express his preference and opinion.   But if you're going to mix business with politics, you have to be willing to accept the consequences.


Costco won't get any more of my money.  I'm turning in my membership card on Saturday -- that will be my first opportunity to physically get to the store.

Yes, Costco, I'm divorcing you.

Will it make a difference in the bottom line?  Probably not.  I'm only one membership card.  But I'm no longer willing to have my money go to line the pockets of marxist-supporting liberals.

My only solace is in knowing that my bathroom is well-stocked with Costco's Kirkland brand of toilet paper, and I will think of Mr. Sinegal every time I use it.

LGBTQ Unions - Problem Solved!

Marriage.  It's a lifetime commitment between a man and woman.  Or at least that's how it's always been defined through history.  Some people believe it is an eternal commitment.  Lots of people don't even make it through one year, much less a lifetime.

It's a Legal Contract.  It can also be a Religious Rite.  It is a Societal Norm.

While I recognize that language is fluid, I don't think we ought to go around making new definitions of long established words and legal terms which would turn courts and common law upside down.  Marriage, spouse, husband, wife.

But homosexuals insist they have the "right to marry" another person of the same sex, establish a family, have legal rights of a spouse.

I have religious and moral beliefs that include homosexual acts as being sinful and against nature.  However, I am not a homosexual.  I don't think it my place to deny a homosexual their own pursuit of happiness.  But I do object to the word "marriage" being applied to their relationships.

So I propose a new term for same sex civil union.  A Legal Contract with rights of inheritance, partnership, family interdependency.

Pairrage.  Maybe with one "r".   Pairage.  Which one looks better?  Which one follows linguistic rules better?

Pairage would be a lifetime commitment between two people, whether they both be man or woman. Or a man and a woman who might prefer to this name for their union (because it is an "equal" partnership and it would be ideal for those who would not want to consider themselves as wives who are "subservient" to their husbands.)

It would involve a legal license obtained at the courthouse.  It would involve a civil or religious ceremony presided over by one in authority (or in Colorado, between the two and duly registered.) It could only be ended by death or dissolution/divorce. It would follow the same rights of property ownership and inheritance as marriage. In pairage, there would be two equal partners, without gender identification.  "My Partner." Partner One and Partner Two on joint legal forms. States that recognize common-law marriages, would recognize common-law pairages. But it might not be between a man and a woman, so it's not a marriage, it's a Pairage. 


It would allow lifetime commitment with legal rights, without compromising the historical definition of the word "marriage".  


It would simplify things greatly.

The Screams for Help

I've been twiscussing with @Vicki627.  She says that Trayvon was screaming for his life while George was terrorizing him with a gun, while I believe that the screams came from George while Trayvon was beating the crap out of him.

Vicki self-identifies as a speech pathologist, and maintains that speech scientists have excluded Zimmerman as the screamer because of age. "Science can analyze fundamental frequency which can determine adult vs youth vocal folds."

For the uneducated like me, "vocal folds" are what we commonly call "vocal cords", the strands of tissue inside your larynx, or voicebox.  Frequency is determined by mass, the thickness of the fold or cord.  How we sing different notes depends on how we can change the shape (stretching or compressing) of the cord while vocalizing, but doing so does not change the actual mass or thickness of the cord/tissue.  (Do I have that right, Vicki?)

How could analysis of frequency determine age?  Older voices have different frequencies than younger ones.  Vicki says that science doesn't lie; and sent me a link to a news article as proof.

. . . But what happens when a potentially crucial piece of evidence is a poor-quality recording of overlapping voices and unintelligible yells, essentially a wilderness of sound?
The answer may come down to which expert you ask.
One of those experts is Alan Reich.
In an effort to find out what might be discerned from the crucial 911 call, the Washington Post retained Reich, 67, a former University of Washington professor with a doctorate in speech science who has worked for prosecutors and defense attorneys in hundreds of criminal and civil cases over a period of more than 35 years.
Using Sony Sound Forge Pro and KayPentax Multi-Speech software, he identified certain sound segments he wanted to examine more closely, such as the yell in the first second of the recording.
The yell in the first second of the recording, Reich concluded, was actually a four-syllable phrase: "I'm begging you." The yell in the very last second before the gunshot was a word that the spectrograph indicated began with a "st" sound, followed by an "ah" sound: "stop."
Reich measured a particular frequency of the "ah" sound, which he said corresponds to certain anatomical factors in the speaker, such as the length and diameter of the vocal tract, as well as speaking style. This frequency, he said, was "highly appropriate for a 17-year-old male" who was still growing.
Throughout the 45 seconds the voice Reich believes to be Martin's was "extraordinarily stressed, frightened and desperate," he concluded.
Reich discerned a second voice in the background, one that was much more difficult to tease out. He amplified those segments, analyzed them and compared the patterns to Zimmerman's vocal patterns on his earlier call.
Reich concluded this voice was the older of the two speakers, Zimmerman.

Voila!  @Vicki627's proof!

But then the article continues:

Another way to consider the 45-second recording is the way James Ryan considers it.
Ryan is the retired head of the FBI forensic audio, video and image analysis unit. He said even the best audio forensic expert using the most sophisticated equipment available would have a difficult time determining much at all from a recording of such degraded quality.
Ryan, who has testified against other audio-recording experts in trials, was asked to point out what he considers to be the vulnerabilities in any expert analysis of the 45-second recording.
Listening to the 45 seconds, what Ryan hears is problems.
Basic facts such as how far the caller's phone was from the scene outside are also unclear, so it is difficult to know how distance or reverberations might have affected the recording.
Those problems are compounded when the science of acoustics is applied to degraded recordings.
The science is useful as an investigative tool, Ryan said, but limited in its usefuless in this type of audio recording.
Ryan also questioned the idea that the age of the person or persons screaming during the 45 seconds can be determined by measuring frequency, or pitch.
"The science doesn't help with a recording like this," Ryan said. "There isn't anything to hang your hat on."
So, Sorry  @Vicki627.  Not buying it. Two "experts".  Two opinions. 

Reich compared the 911 call to Zimmerman's earlier call.  Zimmerman's voice in the earlier call was pretty calm and level.  When a person is screaming while "extraordinarily stressed, frightened and desperate," the qualities of the voice change. It's pretty much comparing apples to oranges.   The FBI concurs:

An FBI expert found crucial evidence in the Trayvon Martin case was inconclusive, saying it was impossible to tell if the voice screaming for help belonged to the black Florida teenager or his shooter George Zimmerman just before the neighborhood watch captain pulled the trigger.

Nonetheless,  @Vicki627's opinion is that the voice screaming has been established to be a younger voice, because of scientific application of fundamental frequency differences caused by age.  Frequency depends on the mass of the vocal fold.  The folds thicken with age.

The way I understand it, thicker, shorter vocal folds create deeper sound, a lower frequency.  Thinner, longer vocal folds create higher tones/frequency.

Are there differences in the vocal folds between races?  And if so, how would that affect the outcome of an analysis looking only for typical differences of age?

I don't have a scientific paper to link to, but just by googling for it, there are several articles discussing how the Negro race has thicker, shorter vocal cords than Caucasian, and that Orientals have even longer and thinner than the other two.  Mostly, these articles are about music, singing, and vocal coaches. Perhaps @Vicki627 can find a properly credentialed paper. 

We could get into a huge conversation about physical differences and characteristics of different races of people, but Vicki informs me that we are all the same, and there are no anatomical differences between any race.

My theory is that Trayvon's thicker, shorter vocal folds are going to emit a frequency that compares to an older person; and that George's thinner, longer vocal folds are going to emit a frequency that compares to a younger person. And that if Mr. Reich did not take racial differences into account when making his study, that his science is suspect.

But, what do I know?  @Vicki627 says I don't know science. 

How to Decrease Voter Fraud

Two simple ways to decrease voter fraud:

  1. When someone dies, the county they die in issues a Death Certificate.  The county sends a copy to the State Bureau of Vital Statistics. The county should also send the name of the deceased to the County Elections Board; if the deceased was a registered voter, the name could then be removed from the voter rolls. 
  2. The county also supervises Jury Selection.  When a potential juror claims non-residence or non-citizen status as an excuse to perform jury duty, the court should forward that information to the County Elections Board.  If that person is a registered voter, the name could then be removed from the voter rolls. 

Both of these actions take place on the local County level. In low population areas, this is easy, a weekly list to check off.  In cities, it would be a daily task for maybe three people - one at the health department, one at the courthouse, one at the elections board, and not so unmanageable that it couldn't be incorporated into an already existing public employee's schedule.

I can hardly believe this.  Florida must be going for the title of "Worst Prosecutors in the US".  Those big, bad bully prosecutors are really working overtime on this thing.

Show them that the rest of the nation does NOT stand with the State of Florida in their quest to destroy George Zimmerman.

If you think George hunted the angelic 12-year-old Trayvon down and shot him, you need to go to The Last Refuge (Conservative Tree House) blog  and read everything they have posted about this case. (starting from Update #1 through Update #28) and look at the real truth.  George Zimmerman was defending himself from an unprovoked attack by Trayvon Martin.  

Also, borrow tactics from the Left.  Why not boycott Florida?, especially the Orlando area.  Cancel your reservations at Disney World.  Don't buy Florida Orange Juice.  TELL the companies you are boycotting why you are doing so.

Coming to a TV Screen Near You . . . Sometime Soon


Fellow Americans, I just want to let you know how much I have enjoyed being your President.  Michelle and I and the girls really like living here.  The girls have adapted to their new school, Michelle loves tending her little kitchen garden out back, and we all really enjoy using the helicopter.

But the reason I am addressing you tonight is this.  It seems that my poll numbers keep dropping.

Look. This is a hard job.  And I inherited a big mess from my predecessor.  And I know I said this recession would be over and recovery would be in full swing by now.  But I just didn't realize how bad things really were.  And this is a really hard job.   I devote every waking hour from 9:30 a.m to 4 p.m. to running this country, and it just seems like there is always more to do.

But I can understand that some of you have lost faith in me.  Gas prices are up because of evil speculators trying to make huge profits from your pockets. Unemployment levels are still too high, because greedy business owners just won't hire new people and take on those extra payroll expenses when sales are not going so good.  And that is why my poll numbers are so low.

 I just wanted to let you know I'm doing something about that.  Recently, I asked my good friends and advisors to find out exactly why people are not rating me favorably in my job as President.  And we have come up with some solutions we think you will like.  The best thing is, I have established a plan, so these solutions will not add a dime to the country's deficit or to your tax bill.  And then you will like me again, and my poll numbers will go back up.

Please like me.  Because I killed Osama Bin Laden.  And I'm the first Black President.

Remember when Obama displayed fine Presidential-quality Leadership by rebuking the New Black Panther Party for offering $100,000 for the capture of George Zimmerman, a US Citizen who hadn't been charged with any crime?

Philadelphia, Pa. — Progressive activists stormed the Franklin Institute this evening. They clashed with tea-party organizer Don Adams, who blocked them from entering. It was a wild, tense scene, just minutes before Mitt Romney appeared here. Adams, who is the man at the door in this video [please go to original article to see video] of the incident, tells NRO that the “nasty” exchange is an example of what Romney will face this fall. 
The article contains an update from the AP which reports:
The protesters said that when they tried to go inside, they were refused entry. Event organizers eventually granted them refunds for their $20 tickets after they chanted loudly on the steps.
The activists, who were from groups such as Occupy Philly and Fight For Philly, said they just wanted to ask Romney questions about his policies. 
I say, let them in.  If it is true they paid their money and they had tickets, let them in.   If they wish to ask him questions, it can be done during a regular question-and-answer segment of his visit.   I would like to see a reasonable and rational Romney answer a reasonably asked question, even if it is an irrational question.

Treat them kindly.  They won't know how to react.

Pain is Pain

Mark Judge's piece today over at The Daily Caller resonates with me.   Entitled "The End of My White Guilt",  he observes.

Black pain is no different than white pain
I think this is true.  I don't believe there are greater or lesser degrees of human suffering based upon color of skin or cultural/ethnic environment.  Pain is pain.

Sotomayor's question

Althouse has:  10 highlights of today's Obamacare oral argument, Justice Sotomayor:
[W]hat percentage of the American people who took their son or daughter to an emergency room and that child was turned away because the parent didn't have insurance — do you think there's a large percentage of the American population who would stand for the death of that child — if they had an allergic reaction and a simple shot would have saved the child?



I'm really curious as to how often this -- refusing to treat a sick child -- happens.

I've taken sick children to doctors and hospitals, without insurance.  They've always been treated.   I paid monthly payments until the bill was taken care of.  Sometimes doctors gave me a break on their fees.  It's called charity.  The hospital social worker had forms for emergency Medicaid.  (I didn't qualify - I made $5.00 too much per month.)


Have you ever been uninsured, and taken a sick child to the ER, and had treatment refused?

A Response to Mr. Jealous and Mr. Washington

The following two articles caught my eye.

"I stand here as a son, father, uncle who is tired of being scared for our boys," said Benjamin Jealous, national president of the NAACP. "I'm tired of telling our young men how they can't dress, where they can't go and how they can't behave."

Always pay close attention to your surroundings, son, especially if you are in an affluent neighborhood where black folks are few. Understand that even though you are not a criminal, some people might assume you are, especially if you are wearing certain clothes.
Never argue with police, but protect your dignity and take pride in humility. When confronted by someone with a badge or a gun, do not flee, fight, or put your hands anywhere other than up.
. . . Like Dotson, Stephney mentioned an ultra-awareness — "a racial Spidey sense, a tingling" — that his sons should heed when stereotyping might place them in danger. 

First, I'm not black.

That doesn't mean I can't relate.  I've lived a lot of places, urban, rural, fully integrated, mostly white, and some in between.

I've been to stores where security followed me around, thinking I'm a shoplifter.  Because I was poorly dressed and had on a baggy coat and a large totebag that things could be stuffed into.  I didn't look like I "belonged".

My children and my husband have all been pulled over by LEO on the roads. And they've been told to put their hands on the steering wheel where the officer can see them.   One was because he was driving a crappy car in an affluent neighborhood, slowing down several times to look for a specific address.  He didn't look like he "belonged".  The others were for bad driving, some in daylight, some at night.  And the one who got rude with the policeman got a pat-down and a ticket with the highest fine, and hauled downtown.  That one was the daughter.

I'm not black, but I can relate.

Know this:   People are going to judge you based on how you look, how you dress, how you act.

I spent an earlier part of my life moving around a lot.  When you are somewhere new, you are the outsider.  You don't "belong".  You have to be on your best behavior until the people  around you know that you are trustworthy.  And it is up to you to show them that you are.  Every time we moved to a new town, the process started over again.

And, Mr. Jealous, I have always considered it my job to tell my young men and ladies what clothes they wear out in public, where they can and cannot go, and how they can and cannot behave. It's called being a parent.

And Mr. Washington, I have always considered it my job to advise my children to be aware of their surroundings and to pay attention to that "sense" of danger.

And that so-called "racial Spidey-sense" ain't racial.  It comes in all colors.

Truth and Justice - Trayvon and George

Well, we certainly have made some progress, haven't we?

We have returned to the late 1960's.

I am very sorry for the family of Trayvon Martin.  I am very sorry for George Zimmerman, and his family, as well.

Trayvon was in a strange neighborhood.  He was visiting.  He had a right to be visiting.

George was an active citizen.  He was a resident of the neighborhood.  He was trying to keep the neighborhood safe.  He had a right to do that.

I have read many reports of what happened that night. I've read comments at the end of those articles, too.  Some comments provide additional information.  Some comments are just hateful.

I have gone to the Sanford city government  website that has a lot of information listed and available for the public to review. I have listened to the 911 calls.  They are not easy to listen to.  But I listened to them anyway.

What they reveal (to me) is the George Zimmerman saw a stranger acting in a way that he regarded suspicious. I don't believe that George thought he was suspicious because he was a black teenager in a hoodie.  George probably knew who "belonged" in his integrated neighborhood, and who didn't.  And he didn't recognize Trayvon.

Was Trayvon simply walking purposefully back to his father's girlfriend's house?  Or was he stopping along the way, looking at or into doors and windows and garages? Did Trayvon know the way back to his father's girlfriend's house?  Was he getting his bearings in order to recognize which house he should go into?   Trayvon's girlfriend says he was talking to her on the phone.  So maybe he was just stopping at certain points in the conversation.  And, if he was motioning with his hands or arms, as people do when they are conversing, he might look to an observer  like he was not acting "right", like maybe he was on drugs or something.

The first 911 call on the Sanford site is George's.   When I listened to it, I could hear the vehicle door shut when he got out  and was moving around.  His breathing is heavy, there is "wind" noise across the phone microphone. But then it gets quiet.  George has stopped moving.  He says "I don't know where he is."  And he waits for a responding officer to call him.   (And I don't hear where he ever says "coons".)  That call ends.

Earlier Tuesday, an attorney for Martin's family revealed the teenager told his girlfriend just moments before he was killed that he was being followed.
"'Oh he's right behind me, he's right behind me again,"' 17-year-old Trayvon Martin told his girlfriend on his cellphone, attorney Benjamin Crump said.
The girl later heard Martin say, "Why are you following me?" Another man asked, "What are you doing around here?"' Crump said.
If true,  I doubt the exchange was very polite or respectful from either side.  A teenager thinks he is being followed and might be in danger of assault by a stranger.  He's asking, "Why are you following me?" George could have said, "I'm in the neighborhood Watch group. Who are you, and what are you doing here?" Trayvon could have chosen to answer with "I'm visiting here with my dad, at his girlfriend's for the week."  Or he could have said "Eff you, who the hell do you think you are?"

But we don't know what was said, if anything.  Or if Trayvon ran from George.  Or if Trayvon then attacked George from behind on his way back to his vehicle. Or if George threw the first punch.

Two of the 911 calls from residents refer to people fighting, and one of those people  is screaming for help.  It is reported that Martin's father has said that those screams are not the voice of his son.  Reference is made to the man on the ground wearing red. (George is wearing red.) Reference  is made to a man in a white or light colored shirt on top of the other one  on the ground.  Then a gunshot is heard, and they think the person now on the ground is dead.

The police came and it was too late for Trayvon.  They handcuffed George, gave him first aid, and took him down to the police station for questioning. They questioned other residents.   George is bloody, his back is wet and grassy.   They have to let him go, according to Florida law, pointed out in the FAQ notice at Sanford city government.   There IS EVIDENCE to them that he acted in self-defense.

One question I have seen raised is:  George knew the police were on the way.  Why didn't he just let Trayvon keep beating him until they got there?    It's been reported that George received treatment at a hospital for a broken nose.  If that is true and George was pummeled enough to sustain a broken nose, and a cut on the back of his head, I doubt he was thinking "How long is it going to take for the police to get here?"  He was probably thinking, "This kid is Hurting Me and I Have To Stop Him, and the Sooner, the Better."

It's a real tragedy.

 I can see that Trayvon had a right to "stand his ground" if confronted by George.  I can see that George had a right to defend himself if assaulted by Trayvon.  One is dead, and the other's life is ruined (and may be ended soon, if the New Black Panther Party has their way.)

But because George is not black, and Trayvon was black,  we have turned back the clock to the 1960's and there's a Race War going on.

What the hell?

I bet Martin Luther King, Jr. is real proud of all this progress we have made.
